Philadelphia 76ers forward Marreese Speights will be traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in a three-team deal that would bring the Sixers a pair of second-round draft picks. The deal has not been approved by the league yet, but there is no reason why such a deal would be upheld. The Sixers would acquire the Grizzlies’ second-round draft pick in June’s draft unless the Grizz finish the season as one of the top four teams in the league. This means the Sixers receive the pick if it falls somewhere in between pick 31-55. In addition to this, the Sixers would also acquire New Orleans’ second-round pick in 2013. New Orleans would get guard Xavier Henry from Memphis.
Sprights has not appeared in any of the Sixers’ first four games. He played in only 39 games last season, averaging 5.4 points and 3.3 rebounds in 11.5 minutes. In his 3-year career, he is averaging 7.2 points and 3.7 rebounds. Speights is a decent offensive player, but is a liability on defense. He has struggled to learn coach Collins’ system, and if you’re not willing to play defense under Collins you will not play. This move most likely means the team has been impressed with the emergence of first round pick Nikola Vucevic.
